Dewlands Lane Cemetery

The Cemetery

Cranleigh Parish Council owns and manages the Dewlands Lane Cemetery in Cranleigh GU6 7AD.

The cemetery is approached through the Lych Gate in Dewlands Lane which was built in 1901.  The cemetery covers 4.25 acres having been extended in the 1990's and is cared for by the Parish Council's dedicated Sexton.

Burials

The cemetery is open for full burials and cremation burials for parishioners, Monday to Thursday between 10.00am and 3.30pm, Fridays by request.

No interment may take place on Saturdays, Sundays, Bank Holidays, Good Friday or Christmas Day.

An interment application form will need to be completed and returned to Cranleigh Parish Council office, before a burial can take place.

A date and time for a burial is to be arranged with Cranleigh Parish Council.

Your chosen funeral director can assist you in arranging the burial.

Grave Purchase

Grave spaces can be purchased at the time of need for parishioners, the Exclusive Right of Burial is then issued for a period of 100 years.

We do not offer the option to pre-purchase or reserve grave spaces within the cemetery.

It is recommend that at least two people are named on the Exclusive Right of Burial. As the owners, you will have the right to say who is buried within the grave, but you do not own the land. The named owners of the Exclusive Right of Burial will have the right to be buried, without gaining permission from the other named owners, provided that you do not transfer the Exclusive Right of Burial to another person and/or the grant period has not expired.

The Exclusive Right of Burial period may be extended, but for no more than a total of 100 years at any one time, or renewed at the end of the given period of time.

The Exclusive Right of Burial grant should be retained in a safe place by the purchaser(s), it is important that Cranleigh Parish Council is updated of any change of address.

Existing Purchased Graves

For a burial to take place in a purchased grave space, the owner(s) of the exclusive rights of burial must sign the interment application form to show their consent for the burial to go ahead.

If a grave owner is being interred, no signature is required as they have the right as owner to be interred within the grave space.

If the registered owner(s) are not available, able or uncontactable then the grave cannot be reopened.

Transferring the Exclusive Right of Burial

On the death of the owner of the Exclusive Right of Burial, a transfer of the Exclusive Right of Burial must take place in order for a memorial to placed, changes to an existing memorial and for future burials to take place. We advise that you contact the Parish Council’s Senior Admin Clerk, as the process to complete the transfer of the Exclusive Right of Burial will vary depending on different individual circumstances.

Any forms required will be created and provided by Cranleigh Parish Council, some forms may require a signature to be witnessed by a Magistrate, Commissioner for Oaths or Solicitor.

If you wish to transfer the Exclusive Right of Burial to another person or add an owner to the Exclusive Right of Burial, please contact the Senior Admin Clerk.
